How Sweden taxes a retirement plan

Every figure this model charges in Sweden, what each one means, the tax office page it came from, and the date we last read it. Plus everything the model does not do here.

Engine 2026Reviewed

The tax chapter of what the model assumes about Sweden.

Figures are for the 2026 tax year, read from the authorities on 2026-07-29. Every one of them links to the page it came from. 2 of them we could not source: we hold the figure and could not find an authority page stating it. Those are marked, and they are the ones most likely to be wrong. If you know better, tell us.

Checked against their rate data. That check reaches part of the calculation, not all of it; the rest is worked through by hand from the authority's own rules.

Income tax bands

The scale your pension and other ordinary income are charged on. Each band's rate applies only to the part of your income inside it, not to all of it.

Sweden lets you keep a slice of your pension before any tax is charged, and the slice is roughly four times larger once you have turned 66 at the start of the year. It is the single biggest thing holding a Swedish pensioner's tax bill down.

Which figures keep up with inflation

A threshold frozen in law quietly costs more every year, because your income rises with prices and the threshold does not. Over a thirty-year retirement that is one of the larger effects on this page.

Where you live inside the country

Tax here is not the same everywhere. The planner asks where you live and charges your own jurisdiction's figures. Skip the question and it charges a stand-in, and says on screen which one.

The planner carries all 290 councils.

They charge between 28.93% in Österåker and 35.65% in Dorotea. Say nothing and you are charged 32.38%.

What this model does not do here

Every one of them, not a selection. 14 are described below.

Where we are measurably wrong

We model these and we know we do not get them exactly right. Where the size could be measured, it is stated.

  • Swedish spouses are taxed as two separate individuals and nothing transfers between them. We give the household two full sets of allowances, which is right when both partners have a pension and wrong when only one does. The second allowance then shelters income the second partner does not have, so a one pension couple is shown somewhere between 35,000 and 43,300 a year less tax than they would pay, depending on where they live.

Your real tax is higher/up to 43 276 kr a year/couples where only one partner has a pension; the amount depends on their kommun

  • Your municipality sets the rate on your pension, and it runs from 28.93 percent to 35.65 percent depending on your address. We do not ask where you live and charge the national average of 32.38 percent instead. Which side of that you land on is worth about 3,900 a year at a 150,000 pension and about 16,100 at a 400,000 one, up to 4 percent of a gross pension.

Could go either way/up to 16 108 kr a year/anyone whose Swedish municipality is not at the national average rate, which is almost everyone

  • Sweden's raised allowance for people over 66 has no formula behind it. The tax agency publishes it only as a table of 1,748 rows, so we hold a single row: the one for a pension of 250,000 a year. At that pension our figure is exact. Away from it we drift both ways, showing about 10,600 a year too little tax at a 150,000 pension and about 12,000 too much at a 400,000 one, and the gap widens the further out you go.

Could go either way/up to 11 958 kr a year/anyone whose Swedish pension is well above or well below 250,000 a year

  • Sweden rounds the income it taxes down to the nearest 100 before applying the rate, and we keep the exact figure. That shows a few kronor more tax than you would really pay, at most 33 a year. We leave it out deliberately: rounding turns the tax into a staircase, and everything else we work out from it comes out steadier without one.

Your real tax is lower/up to 33 kr a year/everyone with a Swedish pension, by a few kronor

Real rules we do not apply

These exist in law and we leave them out, usually because applying them would need a question we do not ask.

  • Most Swedish investing happens inside a tax-favoured account that charges about 1.065 percent a year on the balance above 300,000 and then never taxes a gain or allows a loss. We model the plain taxable account instead, where you are taxed on what you sell. The two bills differ by 13,200 to 66,600 a year in our worked cases: the plain account is cheaper in any single year, and the favoured one wins once about three quarters of what you sell is profit.

Could go either way/up to 66 555 kr a year/anyone holding a Swedish tax-favoured investment account rather than a plain taxable one

  • That raised allowance only arrives once you have turned 66 at the start of the tax year, and we grant it at every age. Retire earlier and Sweden gives you roughly a quarter of the allowance we assume, so the tax on this page is too low by about 27,700 a year on a 250,000 pension, which is 11 percent of it. The age rises to 67 from the start of 2027.

Your real tax is higher/up to 27 673 kr a year/anyone retiring in Sweden before the year they turn 66, which is the early retirement this tool exists to model

  • Sweden lets you take 40,000 a year off the rent from each home you let, plus a further 20 percent of the rent, and taxes only what is left. We tax the rent in full. So we overstate the tax on letting by at least 12,000 a year for each let home, plus 6 percent of the rent, and with the deduction a Swedish retiree letting a room or a summer house very often pays nothing on it at all.

Your real tax is lower/up to 12 000 kr a year/anyone letting a room, a flat or a summer house in Sweden

  • Members of the Church of Sweden and of other registered religious communities pay a church fee of roughly 1 percent of taxable income, and about half the population belongs to one. Membership is a choice so we do not ask, and we could not establish a national average for the fee, so we leave it out. If you are a member, your tax is higher than we show.

Your real tax is higher/the roughly half of Swedes who belong to the Church of Sweden or another registered religious community

  • When you sell listed shares Sweden lets you treat the purchase price as 20 percent of the sale proceeds if that comes out cheaper, which caps the tax at 24 percent of what you sell. We always use your actual purchase price. It only helps a holding that has grown more than fivefold, and where it helps it is worth up to 6 percent of the proceeds, so for those sales we show more tax than you would pay.

Your real tax is lower/anyone selling listed shares that have grown more than fivefold since they were bought

  • Sweden does not carry an investment loss forward. It gives it back in the same year instead, as a credit against your income tax worth 30 percent of the first 100,000 of the loss and 21 percent above that. Losses on shares and equity funds count at 70 percent against other investment income, while bond fund losses count in full. We carry none of this, so a year in which you sell at a loss shows more tax than you would pay.

Your real tax is lower/anyone who sells at a loss in a bad market year

Outside what this tool does

Separate tax systems, or rules that only bite outside a retirement plan.

  • Swedish homeowners pay a yearly municipal charge on the home of 0.75 percent of its assessed value, capped at 10,425 for 2026. Pensioners have a lower cap of 4 percent of income, though never below 4,042. It falls on the property rather than on income, so it sits outside the tax we model. Treat it as a yearly household cost, because nothing on this page includes it.

Your real tax is higher/up to 10 425 kr a year/anyone who owns their home in Sweden

  • Selling your main home in Sweden costs an effective 22 percent of the gain. You can roll the gain into your next home instead, with no interest and no deadline, up to 3,000,000. It is a one off event rather than a yearly rule, so we do not model it, and any lump sum you entered is treated as the amount that actually reaches you.

Your real tax is higher/anyone whose plan involves selling their Swedish home

  • Move abroad and your Swedish pension is taxed under a different set of rules: a flat 22.5 percent in 2026, falling to 20 percent in 2027, with no allowance taken off first, and the guaranteed minimum state pension stops altogether. We model someone who stays resident in Sweden, so none of that shows up here.

Could go either way/anyone planning to draw a Swedish pension while living outside Sweden

  • Sweden runs a separate and much heavier set of rules for dividends and gains taken out of a company you own and control, splitting them between investment income and earned income. They do not touch shares and funds bought on the open market, which is what a retirement portfolio holds, so we never apply them.

Could go either way/a retiree who still owns a stake in a company they control

Every other figure we use for this country (307)

The sections above cover what shapes a retirement plan. These are the rest of what the model reads, listed so nothing it uses is hidden from you.
